THE GOLD STANDARD HAEMATINIC PROBLEM OF IRON THERAPY AND ITS SOLUTION

THE GOLD STANDARD HAEMATINIC PROBLEM OF IRON THERAPY AND ITS SOLUTION:

Ferrous iron is better absorbed on an empty stomach but this makes the side effects worse, probably due to the increased amount of free iron ions and thus free radicals in the gastro-intestinal tract. Indeed it has also been shown that unabsorbed ferrous iron increases the production of free radicals in the colon to a level that could cause mucosal cell damage and perhaps even carcinogenesis.
In order to bind, both transferrin and ferritin, ferrous iron has to be oxidised to ferric iron. During this oxidative process electrons are released which generates highly reactive free radicals. Thus with this free radical generation and consequent cellular destruction, ferrous iron may not be quite as good for the pregnant women as it was once believed and it may make more sense to administer iron in its ferric (physiological) form.
In obstetrics and gynaecology, a serious consideration needs to be given to reduce the generation of free radicals, both within the gut and systemic circulation. This can be achieved by ferric based iron supplements rather than conventional ferrous salts,
Traditional iron preparations contain ferrous salts (Fe + +). They are absorbed by passive uncontrolled diffusion by the mucosal cell of the gastro intestinal tract. Ferrous iron has a low molecular weight and even if the normal transport mechanism is saturated ferrous iron is able to enter the circulation by passive diffusion across the mucosal cell. The risks of overdosage especially in children is therefore quite high.

NOVEL IRON THERAPY (ELERON Polysaccharide-iron complex):
ELERON (Iron polymaltose complex) is a novel iron preparation which contains Ferric iron in non-ionic form and polymaltose in a stable complex. Thus, Eleron ensures regulated absorption of the Ferric iron when it comes in contact with the intestinal mucosal cell surface. A physiological exchange occurs here and the Ferric iron in Eleron in required amounts is transported into the mucosal cell bound to a carrier protein. Inside the cell, it is released/or binding to Ferritin or transferrin without generating any toxic free radicals. Unlike Ferrous salts, the non-ionic state of Eleron does not cause gastro-intestinal irritation which is common with Ferrous salts. The high elemental iron content of Eleron allows convenient once a day dosing.
All the above benefits lead to a novel iron therapy with increased patient compliance.
